FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is Band a class?
Band is a regular class during the school day like it was in middle school. It counts as a grade on your report card, and if you pass the year you will receive your Fine Arts credit that is required to graduate. Band is an all year class that includes both marching and concert season. Make sure your guidance counselor knows you want to sign up for BAND 1.
Who is eligible to be in band?
* Band class is open to anyone who participated in band in middle school.
* Color guard is open to any SMHS student, whether you participated in band or not. (Guard is an after school only extracurricular activity that only meets during marching season. You will not get a grade or academic credit, but you will still be able to earn a varsity letter.)
*** CLARINET PLAYERS NEEDED *** Guard members who did not play in middle school: if you would like to join band class for credit, we will lend you a clarinet to play when marching season is over!

Do I have to audition?
* Brass and woodwind players - no. Just add the class called BAND 1 to your schedule.
* Percussion players do have to audition for marching season to be assigned a part on drumline. You also sign up for BAND 1.
* Color guard - yes, you have to audition. (If you play a band instrument, you may sign up for band class and try out to be part of color guard during marching season and play your instrument during concert season.)
