Beginner Band - Percussion

This class is where you develop your skills on the various percussion instruments. You are eligible for this class whether you played in middle school or not.

The Percussion family encompasses many instruments, which are divided into four main areas:
  • SNARE DRUM - the basic flat, single instrument we use to learn to read rhythms and control your sticks.
  • MALLET INSTRUMENTS - all the instruments that have keys arranged in the same configuration as a piano, played with mallets. We use these instruments to play melodies and learn to read notes on the treble clef treble clef staff.
  • TIMPANI - the biggest drums that play adjustable bass line notes.
  • DRUM SET - the one person set of differently sized drums and cymbal played in combinations to create beats.

FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is this a class or a club?
It is a regular class during the school day. You will get a grade on your report card and your transcript will say you have completed Band 1, which will count as your required Fine Arts credit or other elective.

  • Are there after school practices?
Marching Band participation is optional for beginners. If you want to join the fun at football games, parades, and competitions with your friends, you will be eligible for a marching spot with the understanding that you will play more and more of the music as you master your instrument. You may also choose to focus on just playing your first year and not march.

  • Do I have to have my own equipment?
To start, you will need to provide your own pair of drum sticks. As you progress you will be expected to add to your collection of sticks and mallets. This is both to develop your "toolbox" so you can play the right sound at the right time and to avoid health concerns from sharing hand held items.
